getting IE8 to direct "mailto" to a web based email

My question relates to clicking "mailto" links and getting them to go automatically to your favourite web-based email (Yahoo, hotmail, googlemail etc) instead of opening up a mail programme (outlook, thunderbird, Win7's mail programme etc).
Firefox will do this, but my research so far indicates that IE8 won't (and indeed IE7 didn't either).
But, I wonder: has anyone found a workaround in IE8 (short of copying the mailto link to clipboard, opening your web based email, starting a new email and pasting the mailto link into the address bar (not forgetting to delete "mailto:" ).
(Maybe I should return to Firefox?)
Kind regards
David

My google-fu may be weak but this 'may' point you towards a solution...

Thanks Jessc
The first link relates to the creation of links in webpages - which would be useful for webmasters but not users I think.
The second link looks fascinating. I'll proceed carefully - it looks like the yahoo URL refers to the USA version and I'm not sure whether to replace the us.mc01g.mail.yahoo.com
with something closer to my own yahoo uk address?
I'll come back to it after choir practice this evening and maybe try installing the reg file referred to ...
Kind regards
