    Download GLARY UTILITIES
    http://www.glaryutilities.com/download/gusetup_slim.exe
    Run the ONE CLICK scan
Goto MODULES / SYSTEM TOOLS / WINDOWS STANDARD TOOLS / then run SYSTEM FILE CHECKER

    .............................................................

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/2894/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

Thank you for all the suggestions.

My Brother has actually managed to get hold of Windows XP Professional from a friend of his, and assuming everything is in order, will it just be best to Reinstall XP?

If so, as my Brother and I have never done this before can you please give a step by step and "idiots" (I mean that) guide to Formatting and Reinstallation and the pitfalls we should avoid to ensure the PC is totally clean?

    Thank you.

Make sure a FULL format is run

Once the operating system is on youll need drivers for your computer (usually USB ones graphics card etc). Did the computer comes with a disc of drivers?

I know there is stuff on google and also on Youtube, but I don't think they touch much on avoiding possible mishaps!

I totally forgot about that aliEnRIK!....The advantages of getting guidance from "real" people already clear!......There are no drivers for the PC as he bought it as used.

How do we get around this, I know they can be downloaded from websites, but which websites and for EXACTLY which devices?

Please make other suggestions that you feel will help.

    Thanks.

Well the problem is only a real problem if the ethernet doesnt work (This is VERY rare, so unlikely)
Assuming you can get on the net, my first port of call is WNDOWS UPDATE
goto CUSTOM and it should have a few drivers in there straight away
Another way of getting them is goto DEVICE MANAGER and search for drivers that way (just another way of going about it)
Any yellow exclamation marks in DEVICE MANAGER means you require drivers for them. HOWEVER, some computers still require special drivers even if device manager shows them as fine (This is quite rare too though)

Sometimes ive struggled finding information on which drivers I need so used 'SANDRA LITE' (free program) to tell me information on the motherboard etc then googled for the drivers
BELARC would probably also work for informaton though ive never used it that way

Good guide (including the warnings!) for the repair/reinstall

  • In case anybody else has this "This application has failed to start because themed32.dll was not found." problem, I had it (on a friend's laptop) and fixed it.

The problem is an infected "uxtheme.dll" in \windows\system32. Unfortunately virus checkers seem to find "themed32.dll" first and quarantine it, making the system unusable.

I found that uxtheme.dll was infected by running a scan after booting from the AVG Rescue CD, but that's not necessary for the fix.

Boot up your PC in its crippled state. Start up Task Manager with CtrlAltDel and clicking away the error dialogs you get. Start a command prompt with File->New Task "cmd". Again, just get rid of any error boxes that come up.

You now need to replace \windows\system32\uxtheme.dll with a good one. I found one in \windows\ServicePackFiles\i386, your mileage may vary.

    That's it, job done, reboot.

Run a full virus scan afterwards.

    Scott.
