Options
hi, everyone, i got a parking ticket at york university last week. though i didnt see the sign or meter as its the first time i went to visit my girlfriend. im just wondering since the ticket notice is issued out by york uni and therefore a private company..(i think) do they have any powers do demand payment? are they using scare tactics? ect...im a student myself at a different uni and cant really afford to pay up £50 fine.
if i just didnt pay, what could they do?
thanks

Take you to court? If it was your university they have a raft of sanctions including witholding your degree but as it wasn't I think that the standard advice of ignore applies.
  • yeah luckily its not my uni... i think i'll just go for the ignore technique and if they want to chase it up then they can. though im wondering about bailiffs...could they send them out? i wouldnt have thought a university would employ them but if they do, do they give notice and a last chance of payment?
    cheers

Bailiffs (people who are legally allowed to seize your property to settle a debt) can only be sent by a court. Anyone else who might claim to be a bailiff, but doesn't have a court order, is just a debt collector (ie. a nobody). It would have to get to a very extreme stage, and you would know about it, before a court sent bailiffs, and it isn't going to get that far because it's not worth anyone's time. Ignore the ticket.
