I was the last year to receive the old style loans, commencing academic year 1997. I think it was possible to receive them in 1998 if you should have started 1997, but deferred for a recognised industry training scheme, but I think that will apply to very very few people. So I guess I am about as young as you can be to have the "old-style" loans....
Back to the original question. Yes, it is possible that deductions will continue for a short while after you have finished paying off the loan, as HMRC do not always keep SLC up to date with salary deductions. This has happened to people I know, and the only solution seemed to be nagging. But I have organised friends who knew exactly how much they owed and were paying off. Not sure of another solution apart from nagging....
