Squash advice needed

I am growing squash in pots so that I can move them as and when they need more space but so far they are growing fairly upright and I have put canes into the pots to support them. If I can continue to support them in this way they will need less space but does anyone know if this is possible or am I better allowing them to eventually flop down as I am wondering how the squashes would be off the ground- needing support etc? I have no idea what sort of squash they will be or how big as they all came from a packet of mixed types.

I wouldn't have thought you could grow squash up canes, especially as you don't know how big they would get.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

Supposedly you can grow them up trellis so they get lots of support rather than just a single cane.
I haven't tried this yet - it's on my list for next year when we've got the garden sorted.
