Changing my home AMD Athlon xp1.7 and giving the machine, monitor and printer to my mother to allow her internet access. About £500 to spend though could go as high as 6, if needs be.

Usage is some work and home wp, browsing and surfing, didgy photos inc editing with Adobe photoshop but no gaming [unless you count the odd game of solitair;) ] or other heavy storeage needs. Even with 1000+ photos, my 40GB hdd is well under half full. I also have a small website for a holiday rental which I write/update with Netobjects Fusion.
For the money I'd like a bit of future proofing for 3, maybe [hopefully  ] 5yrs.

From the net I've come across the following:
https://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/742712
Well within budget but would need c£50 spending on extra ram
or
https://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/114100
Which you can bundle with a v7 19" TFT for £500 - my present 3yr old monitor is v7 and I've no complaints. I probably don't need 19" but as Mrs W often says, "size matters!!"
I also quite fancy this one, but at £470 it's pushing the top end money wise when you add a screen and printer.

Any thoughts on these machines or suggestions as to other suitable ones gratefully accepted.

Tesco did have some great deals for pc 17"tft monitor and all in one printer/fax/copier
Can't find them online but they may have just been over your limit anyway - not sure.
Also are there any shops local to you who will build one to your spec?

I don't like the look of the eBuyer one, doesn't seem very good value at all. The PC World one seems to be the best of the bunch.

I've posted a Mesh above. Uses an Athlon 64, which is preferable to a Pentium 4. Seems to be slightly better value for money.

PC Pro have a thing called 'The A List' wich lists all their recommended items. They update it every month. Might be worth a look next time you're in Smiths - you don't even have to buy the mag then!!The HP3210 all in one printer has been recommended in their A List for months now (can get for 135 from savastore). Just got myself one
:dance:There's a real buzz about the neighbourhood

ckerrd As you say nothing on Tesco site, I think it's a bit of pot luck which store you're in on which day, the Club Card points would come in handy though!!
wolfman Surprised you think the ebuyer one isn't good value - I did check on the price comparison sites and on the MESH site they have a 3500+ that if you upgrade to 19"TFT and 1gb of RAM is about a tenner cheaper. Do you rate MESH higher than Fujitsu Siemens?
kerryallc71 Thanks for the links - Toys R us, well I never.
TNG The A list is on their website at https://www.pcpro.co.uk but their reviews seem to be on more expensive machines. On the A list is a higher spec Mesh for under £1k and best business machine is a different model Fujitsu Siemens.

Thanks folks - more trawling around and comparing to do me thinks.

Just that kind of spec. An Athlon 3500+ is a £60 chip these days. You could easily build something much nicer yourself for the same price.

And some of the extra's are a little dated. The rollerball mouse and the modem may not be necessary. Plus graphics card isn't great, looks like the sort that pinches some of the ram to operate. I've just seen better deals about where you get more bang for your buck.
