Car hire excess insurance

Just about to hire a car and do not wish to have to pay extortionate rates to reduce the excess. Has anyone used carhirexcess.com underwritten by Mondial and has anyone had to claim from them?

I haven't used them myself, bouncyd!!! but if you're still considering other candidates, I would recommend icarhireinsurance - used them earlier this year myself, had no problems with them and they're cheap both daily and annually.
  • Just to add to Mr Smith's comments, I bought excess protection from icarhireinsurance.com in May this year. I did have to make a claim after the hirecar was damaged in a carpark and a charge of nearly £400 was applied to my credit card by the rental company. I made a claim on my policy and received a cheque within 3 or 4 days - it all seemed pretty straight forward, I just had to provide my rental agreement ( so make sure you keep hold of that for a few weeks after you get home) and also my credit card statement which showed the charge from the rental company.

I have no experience of Mondial, but other insurers are Questor & Reduce My Excess, both underwritten by White Horse Insurance.

Their quotes are quite different though:

Questor charge £2.98 daily, wheras Reducemyexcess starts at £1.95.

Plus you can also add cover for car hire in the UK, which is handy, Questor 75p a day, Reduce My Excess 50p a day.

Below are typical charges I found with Europcar when hiring a car in Paris.

    * SUPER COLLISION DAMAGE WAIVER (8.01 EUR per day)
    * PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE (8.01 EUR per day)
    * SUPER PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE (5.02 EUR per day)

When you compare to car hire excess charges of £1.95 to over 13 Euros a day (if you add CDW to Personal Accident cover) with companies like Europcar, this is is significant saving.

    More spending money

I'm thinking of registering with Zipcar as they have a nice range of cars parked near me. I'd have to pay £60 extra on top of the registration as a waver for the insurance excess. If I decided to go with https://www.icarhireinsurance.com/ instead, it would cost me £40. So a saving of £20.

For those who are familar with Zipar or https://www.icarhireinsurance.com/, I'm wondering if I should go with https://www.icarhireinsurance.com/ or do everything with Zipcar, even though it would cost an extra £20, as it may be easier/simpler to have it all with one company (and I don't mind paying extra if it mean less hassle)?

    Thanks.
