Problems with Vista not recognising iPhone

Having some sporadic problems with my iPhone and vista laptop. I got the phone about a month ago and at first it was recognised by the laptop for syncing with iTunes etc but the problem was that it would not recognise the phone in my computer (where you access it to access phone data and photo’s).
As I’m considering a move to Windows 7 I thought I would just leave it as is. Quite frankly I can live without that part for a while just as long as I can sync the phone with iTunes.
Roll on to this weekend and now my laptop doesn’t even recognise my phone at all. When I plug it in it says that the driver has failed (or words to that effect) and I cannot even sync my music from Itunes. I’ve tried different transfer cables but with no effect.
Please help.

There's issues with the usbstor.inf and usbstor.sys files (USB Storage drivers) with Windows that tends to manifest itself with Apple products more than others for some reasons. A google should provide a fix.0

There's plenty on there for Vista including links to MS Hotfixes. Just google usbstor vista0

Thanks Hammy. Got the phone recognised for syncing, it's just reverted back to the problem of not showing up in my computer unless I remove the passcode from the phone0
