Does answerphone have to be plugged in to master socket?

Please can anyone tell me whether an answerphone has to be plugged in to the main socket in a house? My main socket is in the study at the front of the house and I never think to check for messages whereas if it was in the lounge or kitchen at the back it would be more obvious.
I have tried unplugging it and plugging it in to the kitchen socket but it makes a high-pitched noise.
Thanks for any help.

  • Do you have ADSL: and if so, do you need a micro-filter in between the kitchen socket and the answerphone?

Sorry to take so long to reply - have been unpacking and sorting out! Yes, I do have ADSL but when I tried the answerphone in the kitchen I used a micro-filter. Still looking for a solution please.

Could be a problem with the kitchen socket - do you have another phone you could try?

I've had a few answerphone sets now (corded and wireless) and always plugged into the office which is an extension. Have used micro-filters in both the main socket (router) and extension with the answerphone since I went ADSL.

That's a point - each time I have tried the answerphone in the kitchen socket I have not had a phone in the study as it is the one I have taken to the kitchen. I'll try it with a old phone in the study and the answerphone in the kitchen and see if it makes a difference.

It should make no difference whatsoever, sounds like the extension socket or wiring is faulty.
Can you get a dial tone using the 'old' phone on the extension?

Realised I didn't reply to this. Sure enough, when I tested the socket with an old plugin phone it didn't work when the same phone worked elsewhere. As it's a new build I have phoned the electrician who installed it and he is coming out to fix it. Thanks for your help, guys.
