Panasonic SD257 or Kenwood BM450

Any body has experience with either Kenwood BM450 or Panasonic SD257?

Which one to buy??

  • Ooh a Pansonic 257 - that must be quite new out! - I do not have a breadmaker but seem to have acquired an encyclopedic knowledge of the different ones available due to my fascination with them and desire to own one. The only think holding me back is the price and the fact that my rear end already looks like the back of a taxi with the doors open;)

In a test in the Daily Mail the Kenwood 450 came top but he Panasonic was also rated very highly. People on here seem to rate the Panasonic so it must be good. I saw a Panasonic BM in Costco the other day for £105.97 inc VAT but didn't look closely at it - just rang them up and they said it was a 257WXC model and that seems to be about the cheapest around at the moment, although you can get a 254 for about £77.

I'm sure there will be others along later with a more experienced hands on view.

I must admit I'd go for a panasonic every time I bought mine about 6-7 years ago and use it almost daily it produces lovely bread, its great for pizza dough to, has a quick bake function mines not the SD257 but panasonic do seem to have a good name for themselves with bread makers.

  • I've never been able to fault Panasonic breadmakers, and the new (May 2010) SD-257 model reflects this design maturity, because it's only an incremental upgrade on the SD-255. I wouldn't upgrade from an SD-255 just for the minimal new features, but I'd certainly opt for an SD-257 over anything else on the market if you're after a brand new machine. I did a short review of the Panasonic SD-257 here which includes a video of me unwrapping my shiny new model and making my first loaf with it!

I had a SD-253 which broke a fortnight ago. I bought a replacement SD-257 and I would echo everything Cherry Hilton Blue has written above.

Kenwood BM450 wins hands down, its quicker, bakes bigger loaves, looks more stylish, has a viewing window, but the main difference is its fan assisted,i think even diehard Panasonic lovers would be very impressed with the kenwood if they tried it(it even somehow manages to make the bread whiter than any other machine.(Costco were selling them for only £70+VAT about 3 weeks ago.)
if you do decide on kenwood tho,i would advice you to ensure it doesnt have the advertising sricker around it,ive had to return mine because this is impossible to remove and totaly wasted the effect.

If this is anything to go by, then the Kenwood BM250 and BM150 scored really badly in a test of 18 breadmakers by Which, infact they were bottom of the pile.
