Bank account for travelling

hi guys,

I am going to be travelling around Europe, India and Thailand in a few weeks and I am looking for the best bank account that I can use abroad. Can anyone help me?

I've already tried Nationwide but they will only offer me a cash card flex account as I "do not have a relationship with them" as one of the advisors told me.

Thanks for any help

have you tried online as sometimes they still give people debit cards, if not and you get the cash card account, at least you will be able to withdraw cheaper than other banks abroad via cash machines, you could then try to get a credit card that doesnt charge for use abroad for purchases (post office or abbey zero, post office sent me a card in less than a week after applying, abbey took quite a while) or the nationwide card, which charges 1% for use out of europe.

The Cash Card Account is shortly having the overseas withdrawal facility removed. Only the (full) FlexAccount will allow overseas access.

    Other possible options include:
    • HSBC will give you access to overseas machines for 2.75% if you open an advance account which is £12 per month with the first 3 months half price.
    • Barclays will give reduced access to certain cash machines with a 2.75% change, these are here. This include accounts which are free of charge.

There's the Santander Zero Credit Card (0% foreign exchange and cash advance fee), but you need to hold a current account with Santander (*gasp*).
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.
