Sardinia

I've found flights to Sardinia for the dates we want in July (3rd to 17th) flying to cagliari. What puts me off is we wont be hiring a car so is Sardinia reasonable to get around with public transport? What resorts are reachable from cagliari airport by public transport/shortish taxi ride and can anyone recommend reasonably priced accomodation?
Also is there enough to interest my kids (16 & 12)? We've done balearics/canaries/costas and city breaks but if it's a beach holiday we usualy like some entertainment in the evening.

Cagliari isn't a tourist resort really, it's a nice enough little town based around the ferry terminal/port. There are nice beaches there easily accessible by bus, but nothing really to grab the interest of tourists. Entertainment in focused mainly on locals.
The Costa Smerelda is more tourist orientated, and is a fave Italian holiday destination. On the whole it's a fairly laid back, sleepy island.
There is a good train service on the island if you want to travel around, but I don't think you're going to find that much for the children to do for 2 weeks compared to places you have been.

The flights are still available today, 4 returns for £760, which is very tempting but I haven't a clue about accomodation and I'm scared we'll end up in the back of beyond, some hotels coming up on websites even seem to be on other islands only reachable by ferry. While I'd happily settle for two weeks on the beach my family would not. Can anyone who's been recommend a resort or hotel where we can at least use a pool and walk out in the evening to find a nice meal? Costa Smeralda seems to be very highly priced. We have a budget of £3k tops including flights and spends.0
