Failed some modules

I am a second year student at a mid-table University. I have just received my exam results, but failed four modules. This means that I am not entitled to be reassessed. It is not possible to repeat the year as I am already on a repeat year. I was unable to complete this stage last year due to exceptional personal problems.

Although I have been at the University every day, including some weekends, I have achieved less than 40% in some modules. I got a low 2.1 in my first year. I feel as though I have wasted three years of my life and got myself in to a mountain of debt for nothing. I have arranged a meeting with my personal supervisor for Monday next week.

It would be difficult to get on another course and have financial implications. I have no work experience. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Many thanks

  • maybe you should take some time out and think about what you want to do with your future? i can understand how life can get on top of you and make uni very difficult. In my second year i got very ill and didnt return for 2 years until i had myself sorted. My situation was slightly different to yourself as i hadnt failed anything, therefore it was much easier to return to uni.

Uni is not for everyone and doesnt mean you cant go on to the career you want, my father went to 2 uni's and was kicked out of both (with no degree) he now has a high powered job and earns a six figure salary so it is possible to be very successful without a degree, however he will be the first to tell you its not easy, but if there is something you really want to do, then there is always a way to get there ;)

The best thing is to discuss everything with the uni, if you have a documented reason why you havent coped thus far, maybe they will give you another chance???

I think you need to have a sit down and think about why you have failed. Was it just that the work was too hard, weren't interested in the course, was there personal issues to deal with, etc. Then you need to think if university is really for you. It isn't for everyone, and shouldn't be either. There are other avenues available.

University will always be there for you to go back to later in life if you want to.

Why not make an appointment with your university's Careers Service to discuss your options? That's what they're there for.

When you say 4 modules do you mean 80 credits. As older says go see your university careers service. Might be worth getting a job for a few years decide what you actually want to with your life then return to uni when your a bit older and wise if that what you want to. I wish that what I'd done tbh.
