RAC Car Insurance - No Good in France...

...or any other EU country except the UK.

I bought RAC car insurance online in Feb this year and to my knowledge I was not asked about EU cover for driving abroad. I called them last week and asked them to let me know how much it will cost to upgrade the insurance to FULLY COMP for our two week holiday in the summer. You do get 3rd party insurance as standard now right across Europe with any policy you buy.

"We don't do it" I was told, "it has to be taken out at the same time you buy the insurance." They will not help at all. They will not even answer my emails to customer services or customer complaints. TOTAL RUBBISH in terms of service.

I have a 2yr old VW Passatt and currently will be driving it in France in the summer 3rd Party only. With other companies like Churchill you just call and they upgrade your EU std 3rd party insurance to fully comp for the dates you give them. Last year it cost about £23 less than a £2 a day - not too bad.

Does anyone know where I can buy fully comp car insurance for 2 weeks EU cover?

My advice, if you think that you might want to travel with your car, is to STAY AWAY from the RAC.

I am open to constructive suggestions.

Dave

As you seem happy to be insured with Aviva/RAC you could take short term cover with Aviva for the trip.
  • Thanks for that Quentin,

I certainly am not happy to be insured with the RAC at the moment....but I am toed in until Feb 2011. Customer service means nothing to them!

I can't seem to find anyone online who will do 2 weeks cover in France.

    Regards,
    Dave.

I know you wanted only constructive comments (and the Aviva suggestion will get you covered for your trip), but it is all your fault for not checking the situation and buying the "add on" when you took out the policy. They aren't alone in doing it this way (ie third party only for EU motoring unless you pay extra from the outset).

    Hi Quentin,

I agree that I should have bought the add on when I bought the policy but we did not know that we were going to France or indeed that there was an add on. This represents a business oportunitity for the RAC but they seem blind to it.

They should be adaptive as most other insurers are. I can not remember being offered the add on. Add to that the fact that they do not reply to customer complaint emails in line with the published SLA show me what sort of company they are.

I need cover for france. I will ask AVIA on the phone as I can not find it on the website.

Can anybody else names of companies that will provide short term fully comp cover for France?

    Regards,
    Dave.

I doubt they will be the only one.

Not a recommendation to use aviva (but you already are via RAC!).

    This is the website:

At least you know you can do it. Hope you find someone better!

Try ringing again as the person you spoke to may possibly have made a mistake in the information they gave you (unfortunately it's not that unusual with Insurers).

Won't insure a car you own with your own annual policy already in force though.
(even if you lie, and select another option, the price for 14 days was half my annual cost as well, so not a moneysaving tip)
