Safety Deposit Box/Safe Custody (NatWest)

Hi

I would like to store some documents with the bank in a safety deposit box (also called safe custody I believe). If anyone could advise specifically about NatWest that would be great, but general pointers are welcome too :)

I'd like to know:

1. How do you set one up?
2. What ID is required? Do I need to take passport/driving licence to set up or is having an account with bank ok?

3. How do you access it? I have a joint account with OH so would like us both to have access. However we are planning to place passports in there so we need to be able to get access without having to show ID!

The reason for this is we have been moving about a lot (we live in rented) and I lost my passport (very inconvenient). Given we will move again and then hopefully (everything crossed) buy a house I don't want to risk losing the cursed thing again, so we thought bung them in the bank so we know exactly where they are. If anyone else knows of another way of long term (a year or two) safe storage for small items, that'd be helpful too!

Many thanks!

Nowadays you can only set it up at a bank where you have an active account.
Some smaller branches may not accept your parcel or may only accept 'non intrinsic' value packages.

Normally you just seal the documents in an envelope (sign over the edges) hand it over - they give you a receipt and charge an annual fee.
It is your responsibility to insure the documents - the bank won't.

To access the package walk into the bank with the receipt and an item of ID such as your bank card and that is normally sufficient.
