Plant to bottom leaf. In a sunny but sheltered spot. If you have the space, up to 15" apart isn't unreasonable, although mine are closer this year.
They need to be in a block, not a row, for pollination.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
The label on mine (from B&Q) said to plant 18 inches apart, and to be in sunny, well-drained soil. I am not confident that mine are actually going to grow though, especially after reading Lotus-eater's comment re pollination - mine are kind of scattered around my veg plot, with lettuces in between (and probably only about a foot apart).

Yea got mine in at 15" apart this year too. I did the whole 18 last year and they weren't even anywhere near touching so can go a bit closer. Even if they do it will only be the leaves really which arn't important bits near where the corn grows.0

In previous years I have grown many sweetcorn about 6 inches apart and grown them in rows. I have always been successful as the only problem I had was mice eating the baby plants.
This year I have lost 3 batches of baby plants, so no sweetcorn for us this year.0 -
I have mine set in 2ft dia tub, was following advice from a regular grower, planting in tubs you can get away with closer distances of the plants. Only going on his advice (can't remember the website now), first time i have attempted it. Fingers crossed
