How to stop my cat getting lost?

I don't know if any of you will remember, but I have a very big ginger Tom cat (he's been 'done'). Now he is a real hunter- he brings back mice, rabbits, squirrels, rats... you know the deal.
Three times in the last couple of months he has gone missing- only to be found about 2 miles away over the other side of our valley. We are very lucky that people find him and call us. He generally sits outside someones house and 'shouts' at them until they feed him- he seems to have success at this! He is a very friendly cat and is obviously starved of affection!
I am wondering if he is getting lost because he is chasing something? Then he can't find his way back? Is there anything I can do to help him? We have walked him back down the route to our house? He does have a collar and a microchip so at least he can be found!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi there
I can only suggest some cat proof fencing to keep him in your garden.
Google Katzecure, purrfect fence and felisafe

Is he chipped?0

Yes, he is chipped. We can't really keep him in the garden as it is rented and very open- there is a lovely big field out the back.0

Put notice up with photo asking those that find him not to feed him0

Depending on how much you want to spend there are various gps locator kits out there! the chips Can be attached to keys, wallets, laptops, pets or kids!!...0

Some of my clients that have overweight cats get a collar engraved saying - "please do not feed me - I am on a medically-prescribed diet". This may help you to prevent other people from feeding him, thus encouraging him to stay closer to home where food is guaranteed. Good Luck!0
