help! BT refund cheque stopped, after i cashed it??

Options
I received a cheque from BT last week, which i thougt was the deposit i paid last year..

As i was short of money, and ddnt want to wait a week, I duly cashed at a local money shop place, after they faxed (to BT?) for ok etc..

Now I get a letter from BT saying the cheque was sent in error, though I need to do nothing?

Have now got email from the money shop, chasing for the money which I no longer have (all went on bills etc).

do i have any redress to BT? and has anyone been on the bad side of these places..?

I can guess they will be ading further costs, or even send the boys round..?

i am boogered.

How much was the cheque for? Do the Moneyshop have your address? (not your email address, the address where you live)

They do take addresses in there I believe and some take your picture AND photocopies of ID/Address forms.

You wouldn't be suggesting if they don't have the OPs address details to simply ignore the Money Shop? As that would be fraud :)

Why didnt the OP send it through regular clearing? Why take it to a cheque cashing place unless they knew they wernt entitled to the cheque

At a guess, the OP's bank account is overdrawn, so the OP preferred 'cash in their hand' from Moneyshop, rather than a smaller overdraft at the bank.

any more snipers out there? come on in and have a go, why do you!

i was after some advice and support, though it seems some people are just here to spoil things. shame.

1- my usual bank a/c does not have an overdraft (and i dont want one!)

2- full ID etc was taken by the shop when cheque was submitted.

3- 'intro fee' for first cheque was 2% (normally 7% i think- this hopefully is a one off..), plus £3 admin/setup charge.. it was the cheapest around.

4- money WAS expected, from BT ( deposit paid last year, for a new line..)

I didn't realise BT refunded anything other than overpayments on your account...I don't ever remember getting a refund of a "deposit" when I left BT

If you paid a deposit (eg if you have a poor or non-existent credit rating they can and do sometimes ask for a deposit of several hundred pounds in advance), you should have received it back. If you didn't pay one, then you wouldn't have got one.

Op, if you believe BT do still owe you money, have you chased them for the return of this money? How much money are you owed by BT, and how much was the cheque they sent you that you cashed? Have BT requested that you pay back the money they erroneously sent you? Maybe BT will use the money they do really owe you to offset the cheque you cashed?

  • My company had a cheque from the Inland Revenue for nearly £30k which I was expecting and duly banked and then drew on the 'cleared' funds. The Inland rev then thought they had made a mistake and cancelled the cheque leaving me in the ***

I had no redress even thougt they were wrong and eventually repaid the cheque for a minor amount smaller.

I had to personally finance the account at great difficulty to cover the cheques raised. I did not even get an appology !!

The bank said that they were within theri rights to cancel teh cheque as it had only been 5 days and not the full 7 days to clear, even thought the bank allowed me to draw on the funds after 5 days !

    Life is unfair !
