new postal orders

I have been informed by my local Nationwide branch that the new crossed postal orders are now teated as cheques so will have to wait to be cleared. I offer the option of paying by postal order and state I treat them as cash.
Has any one had the same message from their banks? I also have a direct debit coming out of my account and almost got caught having paid £5 and thinking that I had sufficient funds when I had not so hope this is useful to all of you.

yep, same here, its standard, all crossed postal orders are treated the same way as a cheque being that you need to wait for clearance.
  • I believe that even the old style crossed postal orders were treated the same as a cheque.

Woohoo! I'm normal! Gotta go tell the cat.

They used to clear straight away, just as though you'd paid cash into your bank account. It seems that the Post Office are nowadays offering few of the services for which they were traditionally used, e.g. cashing benefits, issuing postal orders whose recipients could spend the money straight away, taking TV license payments, etc. Strangely, though, the queues don't seem to be getting any shorter.
  • If your new style postal order is not crossed you can cash it right away at the post office.
