Halifax- not overdrawn/overdrawn

Can someone help me understand the new system. I check my account everyday. Yesterday I had credit, was not overdrawn and "available balance" showed that £50 was due to go out at some point - but this would not take me overdrawn.
This morning - I was overdrawn yesterday?
How is this able to happen - I budget carefully to avoid the ridiculous charges they now slap on you, and my pay was a day late. But surely if the balance shown anytime of a day is in the black - how the heck are the permitted to slyly take you overdrawn in the early hours in a morning when you can do diddly squat about it?!
- Certainly seems that is what has happened! - Though it is still early, and I haven't RE-read the new changes for accounts yet.

This seems to happen with overseas transactions.
e.g. day 1 - day of debit - available balance correct
day 2 - available balance doesn't include the debit
day 3 - apparently, on day 2, the amount was debited "retrospectively"0 -
it could have been for a direct debit or standing order, whereby funds need to be in the account the working day before in order to clear in time.100% G33K
