on the topic if "American Things" ...buying Tinned Pumpkin

I am trying to plan ahead a bit and get the stuff needed for a big Thanksgiving dinner sorted now - the pumpkin pie being the most important of course!!
Does anyone know where I can get some reasonably priced tinned pumpkin? Sainsburys and Waitrose used to carry it but we don't have one near us - only Asda and Tesco, and none of the health food shops here have it either. No oriental shops in our town.
Fresh pumpkin doesn't cut it - it HAS to be tinned for a proper Thanksgiving pumpkin pie!!!! But I hate the thought of paying £4.40 postage for one tin from Cybercandy.
Thanks for any help!!!
~Lynn

Hi Thistledown, no answer to your question from me but I was interested to know why you are having a Thanksgiving Dinner? Maybe you are American or have some in the family... sorry I just really am so nosy and interested in peoples lives... hope you find your tinned pumpkin:T#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

yes, born and raised in the USA (for shame!) but am also a Canadian citizen - have been here for over 10 years now but still celebrate Thanksgiving!! It was always my favourite holiday. My family here is British but are very willing to partake of my Thanksgiving dinner.tanith wrote:Hi Thistledown, no answer to your question from me but I was interested to know why you are having a Thanksgiving Dinner? Thistledown if you are near London or Manchester there is a place called Jerry's Home Stores that stocks it apparently, this is the only number I've been able to find for them, I don't know if it still works or not

Thanks everyone - I am in rural Lincs, nowhere near London or Manchester. I don't think there are any Waitrose in Lincolnshire - we're too poor to shop there apparently!:p
Looks like I'd have to buy a case of 24 tins from PSFoods - maybe worth it and selling the rest to other pie-eating Yanks!;)

Having remebered the guywho used to coach me gymnastics when I was a kid singing "Libby's, Libby's, Libby's, On the table, table table" at one of the other girls who was named Libby. I googled Libby's pumpkin pie filling and found these:
www.americansoda.co.uk
www.americansweets.co.uk
www.distantbrits.co.uk
www.sweetstall.com
www.yankeedoodleiow.co.uk
Don't know how those all work out price-wise once you factor in P&P.
I have made pumpkin pie using fresh pumpkin and felt I had good results although I've never had a pumpkin pie using canned pumpkin so I have nothing to compare it to. I roasted the pumpkin flesh and then mashed it with evaporated milk, sugar and eggs to make a sort of thick custard and flayoured it with a little powdered ginger and cinammon. I made a slghtly sweetned shortcrust pastry and blind baked the case first. Since I don't buy Nestle I'd carry on using the fresh pumpkin even if the tinned is nicer. Plus I like to make a pumpkin latern for Halloween and the pie is pretty much a by-product.0
