Files on different PCs/ back-up drives - how to sync them?

I've got lots and lots of versions of files and folders - thousands - on my three PCs: home, laptop and work (not to mention other versions on my USB sticks and back-up portable hard drives!). Many are identical, but a number are not, as I've worked on some files on the three machines at various times and it's hard to be sure which is the most recent.
What's the simplest way of merging them so that the files and folders are the same on all three? Manually deleting old versions of every one and just keeping the most up-to-date version and copying that across to all three would take forever.
What's the best and quickest way to go about it?
