driving licence renewal / change of address

I have recently changed address, and wish to notify the DVLA.

I have the plastic licence plus the paper counterpart.

Reading the paper counterpart, I think that after filling it in with the new address, and signing it; I send it off, (without a new photo) with the plastic photocard, without any fee, to Swansea.

Am I correct in thinking that I do not need to fill in a D1 form ?

Thanks in anticipation,

Dave.

They say it can be done online in most cases... see here.

You can do it online, but there isn't any major benefit to it, you still have to send back your old licence. I did mine online as it allowed me to send back my old licence after receiving my new one - meaning I wasn't without ID for any time. If you can do without it for a week or two I wouldn't bother going online as it was quite a faff.

If form D1 is the one I'm thinking of you only need to fill it in if your old licence was lost or stolen.

You don't need a new photo (unless you want to update it) as they will have the image scanned into their system (it's not the actual photo pasted to the card - obviously!).

    There shouldn't be any fee.

Thats's how it was when I last did mine last September and I don't think anything has changed.

If you choose not to do it online, then I can confirm you don't need to fill in a D1 for a simple address change.

Thanks for that link KeithP, and thanks to all the others who agreed with him.

Did a pair of them last night for me and my wife, and with the two parts of the licence, and our passports to hand, I fairly wizzed through !

After receipt of the new licence, I have to return the two parts of the old licence, to them, after cutting each in half.

    Thanks again to all. :)

Hi, sorry to steal the thread here but I have a question related to this topic (and saved me starting a new one!)

I'm moving next month so will need to update my driving licence, however, I only have the card part as I have lost my paper counterpart.

Having a look on their website it seems that I need to request a new paper counterpart before changing the address.

Unfortunately, when I originally moved, my drivers licence address was my parents house so didnt think to change it straight away. Then they moved and I put it on the backburner so now if they send the paper counterpart to the address on the system, I wont be able to pick it up.

Can I go straight to the DVLA office and request a new paper counterpart and change my address at the same time?

    Thanks :)

This DVLA webpage implies that you can change your address at the same time as requesting a replacement.
if your address has changed, enter your new address details in section one of the D1 application form

So get a D1 form, from a post office or that webpage, fill it in and sent it with £20 fee.
