Lost cd/dvd drive

I have lost he use of my CD/DVD writer on my laptop for some reason,any help would be welcome

Have you checked the status of the hardware? If it is showing an error such as "error code 31" or similar, you probably have the "upperfilter and lowerfilter" bug that MS seem not to have been able to fix for about eight years.
How you fix it varies depending on what OS have, and you don't say. Here's an example for Vista, but it's similar for XP and Win7:
