Travelling from Exeter to Derby

I am looking at travelling from Exeter to Derby this Friday 18th to see a friend as I have been given my first weekend off in ages! I am staggered as to how expensive the journey will cost, roughly £80 for a return on train on Sunday the 20th. The coach is cheaper but it is also double the travel time! I have tried different ticket combinations with no luck in lowering the price. Does anyone have any advice that could help me still travel on the train but without the massive cost?!

Try splitting at Bristol Temple Meads (£21.50 off peak return) Cheltenham Spa (£14.90 off peak return) then advance singles approx £30 total or off peak return £34.40 if times don't suit.
