A manager should maintain a certain distance from her staff and certainly not go out drinking with the staff on a Friday night.

If you are a manager, don't drink with the staff. If you have to go out with them, do not drink alcohol and do not discuss work matters.

It's a tough lesson to learn in management but it's one that needs learning.

    I don't necessary agree.
It wouldn't be appropiate for say a chief executive to head out with the call handlers and get absolutely slashed but not all managers are senior enough to worry about.

However, my boss quite rightly doesnt know who to believe and has said that we both need to do a lie detector test.

Is your employer called Jeremy Kyle?

I've never heard of an employer using a lie detector, seems ridiculous

He probably has no intention of using it, he just wanted to see their faces when asked and is waiting for the response.

ACAS, and your union if you're in one!

I'd probably say 'yes', and hope that he declined ...
