What recording device should I get?

My beloved VCR looks like it about to go to the eletronic store in the sky. I'm not sure what I'm looking for as a replacement. I'd like a DVD recorder. I'd like to transfer my videos to DVD (before it dies). I want to record things from sky to keep on DVD. And if I'm not in or a programme is on in the night, I'd like something that I can programme to record then.
Optional things: if I'm going to do a lot of recording, I don't know if I should be getting some sort of PVR as I would be using up a lot of discs. But would it be okay if the format is +RW? The option to pause live TV would be nice as I am sometimes interrupted but it is not essential.
Is there anyone out there who can help me updated my ancient electronics to the modern age?
P.S. I have a HD ready TV but no HDTV. I'm hoping to get that in the near future. I also have a Home cinema system which the DVD player upscales to HD quality.
