Travelling to Camden - Help!
Options
Hi
I'm after some advice please. I want to take my 14 year old step daughter on a trip to Camden the Saturday after next from Basingstoke, I don't often use the train or tube and I am after some advice as to what the cheapest option would be. I was originally thinking of taking the train from Basingstoke to London and then the tube into Camden but a friend told me that it might be worth driving to Hatton Cross and then taking the tube?
Please help!
Thanks

I presume it's Waterloo you'll come to - then you have a simple Northern Line journey straight to Camden without changing. You'll pay £28.20 (according to Qjump) for a return with Underground tickets included for you both combined.
Measure that against the hassle of driving, and getting to somewhere like High Barnet (Northern Line tube station with parking) and then paying £10 - £15 to park along with petrol. I'd say train, and also after a day in Camden you'll probably need a drink or two! Not sure how Hatton Cross comes into it?
And enjoy Camden - it's my stomping ground so I know it'll be hard work but fun!0 -
I'm not sure how much National rail tickets to London are, but you can get a One Day off peak Zones 1 & 2 Travelcard for yourself for £4.90 and your daughter (and up to 3 other children) can get the equivalent travelcard for just £1 each. So your total Travelcard cost would be £5.90. This allows unlimited bus, tube, DLR, tram and National Rail Travel in Zones 1 & 2.
Clapham Junction is in Zone 2 and the Basingstoke trains stop at Clapham Junction? So you could get tickets to Clapham Junction from Basingstoke and then get your Travelcards at Clapham Junction and continue by National Rail and tube. A cheap day return for the two of you to Clapham Junction on SWT website is currently showing at £20.85. Trains on Basingstoke - Clapham Junction route on a Saturday's appear to run every 15 - 20 mins and the journey time is just over half an hour. So looks a good service?
So SWT ticket at £20.85 + Travelcards at £5.90 = £26.75 total
Only slightly cheaper than £28.20 but would pay for an ice cream!

Hatton Cross is probably one of the nearest Tube stations to the M3 which comes up from Basingstoke. It is in Zone 5 - 6. Hatton Cross is Heathrow Airport and parking is either expensive or non existent!! If driving up probably better to go to Hounslow West. It is approx 2 miles further down towards London (A30 then A3006 Bath Road) and has a large station car park that cost about £2 - £2.50 per day to park. One day Zones 5 - 6 Travelcard from Hounslow west is £6.30 for an adult and £1 for up to 4 accompnying children 15 and under.
Piccadilly Line to either Leicester Square or Kings Cross then Northen Line to Camden Town.

Great, thanks to you all for your help. I have decided to go via the train to Clapham and then tube for the £28.20. Not bad for a day out in Camden really. We do not inherit the earth from our fathers, we borrow it from our grandchildren0
