i dont mind going to somewhere where its going to be safe.

Not possible on a quad bike, surely? :D Same with skateboards.

Not a reason not to get one though, kids are meant to get out and about and do stuff that will probably lead to scars.

In this case though, like others have said, thats a hefty investment for an 8yr old when they might decide they want to be a drummer or whatever the next week. Just have a few weekends at a local centre doing some quad biking and carting etc and see how you go.

Cheaper to confirm the level of interest slowly and let him learn some quad biking somewhere professional and safer, rather than jumping straight in the deep end and waving him off across a random field at high speed.....

Kids aren't famed for their judgement when it comes to these things - I rolled a quad bike once in france, the guy just popped 10 year old me on a quad bike and let me crack on, with the inevitable result of inexperienced throttle control and the fact that he hadn't mentioned where the brakes were (I didn't care being 10, so didn't ask I just wanted the speed) of stacking it up a pile of rocks on a corner and flying into a bush and rolling it on top of me. I still have the scars. And then being sworn at in french for rolling the quad

Personally I feel 8 is quite a bit too young to put a child on a potentially unstable motorised vehicle in an unregulated environment.

The contrast with, say, karting couldn't be more clear.

You do have to learn to lean into corners and learn how shift weight probably on quads there a lot of work to ride. You don't just simple sit on one most the time you have to stood. up

Have you considered a membership to local go kart place much safer motor sport and easier for a 8 year old to do.

Imo, mainly two type's of people buy quad-bikes.... Farmers/landowners or chavs.

The former use them for legit reasons, the later go tearing up and down residential streets or the local canals causing damage that British Waterways don't have the funding to repair :/

There are of course those who compete and those who use them as cheap road transportation, but these are relatively few and far between.

Owning one is a risky business, because as soon as people know where it's kept you'll be a target for small time criminals.

Next he'll be asking for an air rifle or BB gun....

Actually he wont be asking for an air rifle as he does rifle shooting with Scouts, no we dont own enough land for him to ride on, and were not chav's.
He used to own a battery quad (12v) and enjoyed riding it, But im aware that moving to a petrol quad is likely to rip up the garden, hence why i am looking for a safe track for him to ride on.
I would never allow him to ride in the street or anywhere illegal, hes not even allowed out of the garden!
I may look into a bigger battery quad, and maybe a quad club.

Unless you own the land you should get written permission from the landowner. I was in the works carpark
doing my old LR up and for some unknown reason a copper drives in.

Questions what i am doing there & asks if i own the vehicles, Yes i do and no they aint roadworthy cause they dont
get used on the road, Asks me if i have permission.

I hinted that i could show him my letter but i would have to lock the gates with him inside whilst i fetch them
    soon put him off.
Always locked the gates after that.
