Error message when starting laptop up

My daughter has a toshiba and cant get on the laptop when she starts the laptop up its says on the black screen" windows failed to start a recent hardware or software change may be the cause". To fix the problem:
insert your windows installation disc and restart, which i havent got
choose your language settings and click next
click repair your computer
When u go into safe mode or any other you get a message saying loadi ng window files b ut nothing happens, please someone help all my daughters homework is on this laptop.

Ah for the want of making a simple backup and a recovery disc.......
You may end up losing said homework but....
When starting the computer, press f8 until the boot menu comes up. Select Repair Computer. This starts up the recovery software in the restore partition. Have a go through the options there - the final one at the bottom being to restore to factory which will completely wipe the hard drive.0 -
Or, go into select start up mode and choose "Start with Last Know Good Settings".
F8/F12/F1 something along those lines.
