Healthy Meals for a 5 Year Old

It does sound like exercise is more of an issue than food. Skipping, trampoline, hola, swimming, cycling, tag (friends/siblings?), races, etc are all great fun at that age. Could you go cycling or swimming with her and get fit together?0

We bought her a bike but she's really not a fan of it. But we could certainly try swimming. I wonder if there are any special classes that might make this a bit more fun for her? I'm not quite sure what i'm after but something extra than a swimming lesson.
I'm also looking into some dancing classes and failing that a dancing DVD that she could do at home and perhaps we could do it with her. She does love to dance so i'm hoping I can find something that would suit her and she would enjoy it.
EDIT: I've just seen this on Play:

Anyone had it/recommend it? I've seen some good recommendations so far0 -

Well done you for taking the first steps in posting for advice - I have been following a website called cheap family meals - weezl who has 'written' in (with help from her fab team) is a poster on here so you could do a search for her on here for some background. Her website is essentially very healthy and cheap and does I think allow for full time owrking - there's lots of tips for getting organised with shopping etc I think.
I have no allegiance to the site btw but have found it fascinating to start to learn some really useful shopping/cooking/eating tips.
Just google cheap family meals - think it is the first result - will just go and check!Target for MAD - 24:)0 -
Unfortunately our garden is in desperate need of a clean up and therefore in no fit state to grow our own potatoes. I like your style though!

This is what ours are growing in... http://www.dobies.co.uk/Shop/Gardening+Equipment/Vegetable+Growing/Growing+Potatoes/Potato+Barrel+559171.htm?ito=2073&itc=754&itkw=potato%20barrel&gclid=CMPvhauioKICFSU8lAod8DpGxA although we did not get it from here.
however you can grow them in anything. All you need is a little corner somewhere!0 -

Just thought, we have this game which is brilliant... http://www.smythstoys.com/board-games/cranium-hullabaloo-c05326pd.aspx
All our daughters friends loved it so much that their Mums all got it for them for Xmas!
Rather than a DVD why not put the music on & just dance around the living room...we often do!0 -
Hi
try this website its brilliant
http://www.nhs.uk/change4life/Pages/RecipeBookBreakfast.aspx
Also you can register with them and they will send you lots of inspirational child friendly material such as a star chart which is brilliant.
Dont get too obsessed by it though. My kids were on the podgy side when little and then just grew and grew and it evened itself out. Good luckI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
My DD was never horribly keen on sandwiches in her lunches, but was happy to have stuff put in a wrap (soft flour tortilla). And you can put practically ANYTHING in them. Lots of times she would just stuff it full of salad veg and she called it a veggie taco. Cold leftover chicken with chopped lettuce, tomato, grated cheese. Any kind of sandwich filling would work.MSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0

Basically I've just received a letter from the Health Authority that my daughter is grossly overweight. She is actually 5lbs above the top tier of what they consider her weight 'should' be and therefore we feel we need to start her eating a bit healthier. I've made a start with cutting out the drive to school to us walking.
There's loads of good advice in the previous replies but, can I just ask, what does your daughter look like? It's one thing for people to look at charts and tell you she's overweight but does she look it? If she is a bit tubby or has some rolls of fat, work on getter her slimmer but if she looks alright, don't worry too much. She could put on a spurt of growth in the next couple of months and be back within the approved bands.0 -
I'm dreading my son being weighed etc when he starts school in September. He weighs 3 1/2 stone but there's not an ounce of fat on him, he's just solid. He is quite tall but i've got a feeling he'll be classed as overweight. I agree with mojisola in that if she doesn't look fat don't worry too much. Mind you improving overall diet and fitness is never a bad thing.0
