Thank you all very much for the replies.

I think i will avoid the Buttertubs pass on the A59, potential animals and unlit / unfamiliar roads! Since it will be late at night and dark the scenery won't be of any consequence.

This was just the sort of advice I was after.

It sounds like the route i will go will be M6, M61, M62, M1, A64.

Thanks again for all the replies.

Oh I totally forgot to mention the M61! I've done that bit so many times I just automatically go onto it without thinking! How on Earth would you get onto the M62 East straight from the M6?!

Well, yes, but there's no point in going all the way down when the M61 cuts straight across.

Try the other route I suggested, you may be very pleasantly surprised. ;)
The M65, A56 and M66 rarely get as busy as the M61 in my experience. By the time you join the 62 at Birch you're past a lot of the "around Manchester" traffic, it's mostly trans-pennine by then and you don't get the "mire ups" as often as when you're joining the 62 from the 61.

Oh I'll try that and let you know, thanks! I do that route fairly often.
