The flat screen monitor that I use with my desktop keeps fading in and out. Thought it could be a problem with the monitor but tried it on another one and same problem. Desktop is Windows XP. Advice welcome please, ho[efully I don't have to buy another one !

Can you try another known-to-be-working monitor on the original system unit? This should confirm that the problem is with the monitor and not with the original system unit's graphics card or motherboard, if it has built-in video.0 -
Mean't to say that I connected another monitor to the desktop and still had the same problem.0

Ah, the exact opposite of what I thought you said! Then the problem seems to be with the video output from the graphics card or motherboard. If you plug in the video cable from the monitor into the socket on the system unit, and you have the screws quite tight, and then you (gently!) press the plug up or down, does anything change on the screen itself? If it does, it might be the internal connections on the video socket in the system unit. If nothing changes on the screen, then you might have a failure in the graphics card or the motherboard that will require a hardware engineer to sort out. I presume you haven't done anything like updating graphics drivers just before the problem started?0

Either the inverter (most likely) or the backlight is failing. It can be repaired but they're so cheap it is uneconomical.0
