:rotfl: at the thought of a poor peasant girl togged out in gold...
Have a quick think through your own wardrobe as well, or anyone else's that you can borrow from, peasant children wouldn't have had clothes that fitted, they'd have worn what was available and girls would have covered it with an apron to make it last as long as possible. It would have been cast-offs and hand-me-downs. A skirt with a belt or bit of string round the waist to hold it up (safety pins to hold it onto the string LOL), an oversize shirt or dress with the sleeves rolled up and top it off with a shawl.

poor you - I remember having to do this one for my daughter many years ago. I adapted an ordinary dress pattern by lengthening the skirt. I didnt bother hemming the dress and deliberately cut it ragged. and I made it out of an old flowered flannelette sheet! then told her to go out and play in it! she got it lovely and dirty, bless her! and managed a really nice rip on the skirt which got mended with Large stitches! I then found an old cookery apron which was a bit stained and stained it a bit more with some coffee dripped down it and finally soaked it in tea then dried.
hope this helps with some ideas hun. It didnt cost me anything to make and daughter was convinced HER costume was the best one!0 -
ive a length of white cotton i can adapt, and ive been lent a costume, but its tooooo new, so i may use the fabric from a gold bridesmaid adult dress, and knt the shawl very loosley with huge needles!
i dont want to spend loads and want it to look ok.
ive a busy weekend so ill get on the case next week:A :j0 -
We did Oliver last yr, all the scruffy kids wore, old trousers cut ragged (pj bottoms), white shirt dyed with a tea bag and a very simple waiscoat cut from 1 piece of grey fabric, we used a kids high viz jacket for the pattern then a flat cap! All the kids wore the same including girls, looked absolutly fine!0
