Air con/Heater blowers/Fan all KAPPUT!

Hi, I'm a newwwww member lol and have a bit of a poxy problem. I own a 1997 Escort Ghia X. In typical Escort fashion the temp gauge has never worked, the fan packed up working as well (always nice for the summer). My bloke managed to get the fan to work solely by switching the air con on. All good...hahahahaha so I thought (that wasn't a slight at him, I'm just glad I could get the fan on). All of a sudden, the air con, heater blowers and engine fan don't go at all. I have a hot car and a hot engine. Is there any reason why all 3 essentially should die at the same time. I've been given several 'reasons' why so far i.e. the fan motors gone, the resistors gone, the fan switch has gone, the temperature gauge has gone, the thermostat is stuck open/closed etc etc. Is there a really likely cause or is this a take it in job. We're broke and I can't afford to get it done at garage prices so a DIY job would be awesome. Anyone who could explain in a fairly simple way how to diagnose the problem or what it's likely to be have my eternal gratitude and a cyber smacker. Thanks peeps, Becci xxx
