bsod is invariably caused by software or drivers, not hardware

I see the BSOD on a daily basis (i repair computer) and almost all of the time there is no need to replace any hardware. Some Blue Screen errors take 10 minutes to fix (like the one i had today) or a few hours depending on the severity

I think your brother was either very unlucky or ripped off.

    - To the Original poster, find a friendly repair shop and ask them to diagnose the problem. would cost you around £20 for a diagnosis....

Browntoa - it won't let me enter administrator. The option is already there but it won't accept any passwords on any of the accounts.

I am now getting the option of starting in safe mode. That wasn't there the last times I tried. the only difference is that I have moved the computer. Weird

    tried no password?

Factory restore will wipe your data, is that what you want to happen?

Yeah, doesn't work without a password either. The main things I need are backed up.

Try giving the DELL techies a call. When I had problems with my old laptop they were brilliant. They sent me the discs free of charge and then phone me back a few days later and talked me through the re-install.

Its worth a try for the cost of a phone call.
