Free on-line email to fax service?

Hi, I have checked out c-net downloads for this but can't find anything.

Years ago I used to have a free online fax service which allowed me to e-mail a letter or document to a normal landline fax number.

I now find myself needing to fax a letter, and it would be so much easier to do it from my pc, but I can't find any free software for this.

I am on Win 7 and understand that some sort of free fax is available, but I don't have a fax modem, so I don't think that's the way to go for me?

Can anyone recommend something tried and trusted that will do the job?

Many thanks

Edit: I'm not very techie, so apologies in advance if I'm asking a numpty question!

Popfax is excellent but not free, this seems to use popfax, whilst being free. If you're looking to send a lot, I'd go for popfax, they're fantastic.

There is no such thing like a free lunch.

Somebody needs to pay for sending the fax to the recipient. If there is really such a "free" service, then it needs to be financed by ads.
  • https://www.soho66.co.uk will provide you with a local fax number for £2 per month plus 7p per page sent. Having been with JFAX for eons, have now switched just this last week to Soho. Apart from being around 20% of the cost I was paying, there is no difference in the facilities.

The web site http://www.tpc.int allows you to send a fax for free with an advert on cover page, it send it in plain text format unless you download some Client Software. I have not used it for over 5 years so not sure how reliable it is.

http://www.myfax.com/free/ also allows you to send a fax for free, I have never used this so I'm not sure how reliable it is, also check the Terms & Conditions.

Have a look at http://www.fax1.com/ which I use. It is not actually free, but when you first sign up they give you a trial $1 and you can then top up with a minimum of $10. Faxes to the UK cost 12c per sheet so it is relatively cheap. When I had a problem with it I contacted them and they gave me an extra $3 of balance, so I haven't actually paid them anything yet...

I did use tpc.int for a while, but it became very unreliable.
