Problems registering Barclays Internet Banking

My mum has just tried to register with Barclays online banking and it came up with:

68 - Sorry - we aren't able to register you online at the moment. Please call 0845 600 2323 (from outside the UK call +44 2476 842063) quoting code 68. The people there will be able to help.

So she duly rings the above number and gets an Indian bloke who she can't understand too well. Anyway, the bloke said that she'd have to go in to her branch in person with 2 forms of ID to set internet banking up but mum couldn't really get the reason why, other than something about 'status of account', because of the heavy accent (after asking a few times it gets a bit embarrassing and she didn't want to seem rude).

Mum has plenty of money in the account and no debts.

Has anyone else had this and what was the reason that you couldn't just set it up online?

Many thanks.

    Not sure

there are problems logging in sometimes which might account for the registration issues,

Has she tried at a diifferent times of the day.
    try the +44 number.

I think I got that error code when I was bankrupt and they wouldn't let me log in until I was discharged.

Is your mum bankrupt? If so, she won't be able to get online banking with barclays until she's discharged.

If not, they might have accidentally put a bankruptcy marker on her account, which will cause this. Tell them to check her account flags to make sure there's nothing untoward on there.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers

    Thanks for the replies guys.

No, she's not bankrupt and has a far healthier account than me lol but anyway she's popping in to branch on Fri so hopefully she'll find out then.

I'll post the result just in case it helps anyone else.

I had the problem when I opened my account. The Branch staff had entered my date of birth incorrectly.

Well she popped in to the bank yesterday and they didn't really give an explanation but have made her and my dad an appointment to see someone today so they can go through the process together.

They basically want to show them both how to use pin sentry and stuff. I'm wondering if it's something to do with their age? My mum is in her early fifties and my dad in his sixties but it's a bit patronising if that's the case.
