Natwest Nightmare

I've just started a new permanent job after working as a temp for the past 6 months and had my first monthly pay slip last week. However the ever so delightful Natwest seem to have been their usual helpful selfs and not taken my loan money out that I owed them. When I checked my statement on line it looked like it had come out, but now it says unpaid direct debit - even though I had enough money to cover it!?!?!? To top it all off, it now looks like they have cancelled my overdraft with them as well even though I've had nothing in writing!! I am quite tempted to leave them now and open up a basic account as I think my credit score isn't teh greatest as I have had some problems with pay over the past few months as I was on a weekly wage. Is this a good idea?? I've had no offer of help from Natwest whilst I've had problems - so much for ther 'helpful banking' slogan!

Sorry for the rant - they make me so angry

Speak to the bank and find out why they returned the funds unpaid. For example, did you get paid by cheque or direct payment? Did the payment go into your account on time?
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

There's obviously more to this than what you've put !
  • With most banks the money for a DD has to be in the account the working day BEFORE the DD is due. In effect the DD is debited at 00:01 on the debit day. If "bounced" it would normally show as a debit initially, then a reversal of that debit. Thanks to the "debits before credits" policy it may not look like you were overdrawn, but on the above technicality, you were. That may or may not explain what has happened.

It is extremely unlikely to have been returned unpaid (and charged for) had cleared funds been available.
  • When I rang last night, the girl I spoke to said that due to the time of day I was calling, she couldn't see past the 9th June on her system to look at why it hadn't gone through in the first place. I asked if they had tried to take it a moment before my wages went in but she couldn't tell me that! She said she would call me today but am still waiting. Just want to get to the bottom of it as I definitly had enough in as cleared funds and this was the first debit due out! I look forward to more of Natwest's hold music tonite!!

Are you paid by Faster Payment rather than BACs? They may not do the payroll until the afternoon by which time the decision to pay or return an item would already have been made. A BACs would be in at effectively the same time as the debit and it would not cause a problem.
