How many negs before you wont buy?

I was just browsing for an item, was going to bid, checked the feedback first and this guy got 10 negs out of 1,000+, at 99.2% it seems ok but judging from the feedback he seems like an a$$ if there is a problem. Then i realised that all my purchases, non has ever got more than 6-8 negs as I tend to avoid those who has more. This seems to be my gut instinct telling me to avoid them unconsciously, the only exception are those with more than 10,000, then it would be a max of around 100 negs or 1% of their total feedback.

So what seems to be your limit before you reconsider?

  • I suppose it also depends on how spread out those negs are. If they are all in the last month then I would stay away!

I agree. I also look to see if a seller hands out retaliatory negs and if so what is said.

  • true but it seems that once they get over a certain number, they cease to care about keeping their feedback clean and their response to the negs gets progressively worse and lame as if they dont care anymore. The first 1-6 negs are often very spaced out and they defend against it quite well, but after that, the negs, more often then not becomes more frequent.
  • Depends on what they are for. If they are retalitory then I will disregard them. It also depends on what I am buying. I will take more of risk on a low value item .

Why do you disregard an Ebay seller if you think the feedback is retalitory? As a powerseller for over 6 years, the world is full of constant buyers which don't pay then leave neg feedback for the hell of it. Ebays policy of the non-payer not being able to leave feedback to protect the seller is rubbish. If they bid and then turn round and say they made a mistake, they can still leave neg feedback before you can file for your fees back.
In these circumstances any neg feedback is going to be retalitory.

like others have said it depends on the spread of negs if they are all in the last month i would prob be put off and depends on the amount i am going to pay for the item a low cost item prob would take more of a risk

I agree with ts_aly2000 you get a feel for the negs I reckon well over half the negs for sellers that I read have been unjustified. However it is the tone of any feedback left by sellers that I find important.

Assuming a seller has a large number of feedback as long as it's over 98% I am fairly happy....subject to tone. If the seller is newer I can let that slide a bit but will look even more closely at the tone of his replies.

As a seller it tends to cost quite a lot to keep buyers happy; many times they can have expectations that are way to high. The ones that lose out on any customer service are those that start of threatening bad feedback, followed by those that start quoting the sale of goods act in their first email ....with those ones you know you are in trouble and virtually nothing you do can resolve that situation.

Bad feedback has little or no impact on buyers (unless they are newbies) as a seller I acn not stop any buyer (apart from those with negaticve feedback).

So to summarise the numbers in themselves are not as important as the tone of feedback. Of course in saying that a seller of 1,000 feedbacks with less than 98% would probably not get my business.
  • Once a seller has a few hundred positives, then a handful of negs do not bother me, as long as they are not all recent

I've bought off people with over 300 negs before and things have gone OK. It depends on how it balances up with the positives. If the 300 negs seller has got 13,000 positives it balances out. I also hate the type of buyers who wade through hundreds of positives looking for the few negatives in the list.
