FRAUD: Alliance & Leicester Debit card

Hey

i have been a victim of fraudalent use of my debit card details
and scammed £1500 out of my bank account with 3 seperate
transactions , to some where in RUSSIA !! ??

salary had only gone in a day earlier !! as normally
i transfer a chunk straight out ( don;t like to leave much in there etc ) been a right pain as i have payments that have to be made etc ( mortage )

thing is , i only use my dedit card for 4 type of activities in the last 3 months 1.( cash point ) 2.paying amazon credit card ( online )
3. paying ( trainline for tickets online ) 4 . pay tesco credit card
over phone automated system.

the P.C i use has an operating system of Linux freespire 8.0.9 thus unlikely any one could hack into it ( ie , not windows )

so unless the cashpoint i use had been tampered with i am at
a loss hpow they got my details and visa verify password

i am tending to think perhaps amazons credit card ( citi bank )
could be the leaky side ?

anyways
Question

If only there was a debit / credit card where one could
change the cards number straight after use to maximise security ?

maybe just keep changing the varify password on regular basis ?

as its a pain having to keep checking these accounts for irregular activity , what would be the best bank to use as a holding bank to pay off credit cards and other sites that could become comprimised
etc ?

what are your thoughts

kind regards
Richard

If it's an electronic money transfer sounds like your internet log in/password has been compromised, not the card details.

The problem with chip and pin cards there is always some associated risk. I was recently speaking to my bank manager about the risks of card fraud, even he had been bitten, although not 100% sure he believes his card was cloned in a restaurant.
If buying online it is always best to use a credit card as you have more protection or better still I would definitely recommend Paypal. I recently made a purchase whilst at my sons as this was from an unusual location Paypal automatically flagged the transaction and needed verification although very annoying at the time I appreciate the security measures that they must have in place to have recognized that I was buying from an unusual location.

it was the debit card , as they blocked it and issued a new card and new pin etc ( ie, they must of cloned it somehow )

yes i usually use my credit cards for online purchases , however companies such as the trainline there is charge for credit cards .

i do use paypal for ebay and other sites where it is excepted
you say there is a paypal debit card ? that might be a good thing

perhaps a way forward could be to transfer money from a bank into a
debit card , then have the card able to be unlocked/locked .
ie, unlock the card( account ) only when you need to use it , again with a unique customer pin vai
    a card reader ?

    Cheers
    Rich

You may think it worthwile to report this to Action Fraud (click here there's a link to Action Fraud).

They will also offer advice and have a Free Phone number to call.

I'd also ask your card issuer the million dollar question:

    How was the fraud perpetrated?

Was it definitely your PIN that had been compromised?

Get them to clarify that it wasn't your card details.

    Good luck.

If you do contact Action Fraud, please let's know how you got on.

How unfortunate, did your mail order bride turn up at least? :-)

If it was on your visa debit, ring the bank and ask for a visa debit charge back as the transactions were fraud and you should get the money back.

We were taken for £1200 also on our A and L debit card last summer-we think it was cloned at a cashpoint. I have to say A and L were excellent, all refunded within a day or two...hope it's the same for you!
    Debt-free...and staying that way...

Hi yes , It is getting repaid back to me , 3 out of the 6 amounts
    has so far been repaid.

I am unable to speak to anyone in the fraud office within
Alliance & Leicester , i am told they are extremely busy ,
they have been forwarded my mobile number but have not yet rung me
so i am unable to ask them specifics about this case.

still awaiting my new debit card , i am getting the other half
to cover some of our outgoings as i am out of pocket at them moment.

funnily enough we had an issue back in March with an
Egg online savings account where some money went walkies ,
turned out in the end to be an admin error their end !
we since closed that account .

must admit A&L have been good over the years ( around 10 yrs )
opened the bank account when they first ran the £50 to join
offer , although it remains to be seen how they will fair
now under the Santander umberalla ?

oh well , thanks for your words of encouragement

    cheers Rich.

Most banks offer free banking with a debit card, another option is to take advantage of these and open a small account with no overdraft facility purely for coincidental online purchaces that would otherwise have an additional fee for credit cards
