a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
if this is the fiurst time you have seen this screen reboot etc.. if it re-appears follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defrag or backup utilities. Check your hard disc configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run chkdsk /f to check for hard drive corruption, and then respart your computer.
Technical information:
***STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x875A2008, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)
... any ideas..? I have rebooted, cant get it to start in safe mode, cant get it restore last sucessful windowns setup, or whatever it's called...
...any help gratefully appreciated, I have 20-odd undergrad assignments on it that I need to mark in the next couple of days!!'
Apologies for the terrible typing, am trying to type on an unfeasabvly small keyboard!!

Hi there, try the advice from this site. The blue screen error looks exactly like the one you have!Useful is beautiful0

STOP 0x24 indicates a problem with your NTFS file system, perhaps a hard disk error.
You want to run CHKDSK C: /F /R from 'Safe Mode with Command Prompt', which you say you can't get into. What actual problem do you have with getting into safe mode? Presumably you are pressing F8 regularly about twice a second when powering on? If you have a USB keyboard, see if you can get into safe mode using the old PS/2 keyboard (presuming you have one of these, and a PS/2 socket on the back of the system unit!).0 -
when I select 'safe mode with coimmand prompt' it asks me to select either:
Microsoft windown recovery console
or
windows xp home edition
... which should I select?0 -

There is usually something other than the stop code you can search on too in order to give more clues about what the problem is.
If you can't even get it to boot in safe mode though you may be well up that well known creek (I'm assuming you have no backups). Presumably you can get the undergrad project back from their owners. If not then booting from a Linux live CD and pulling the data off across a network or to a usb drive should solve that problem.
I tried to run defragment last night - I didnt get that far, but did run disc cleanup - I think that may be the problem?
I can get hold of the work I have to mark again, I could just do with the computer to work on! If not, I will have to try and borrow one, but its a pain!!0 -
for the moment Ubuntu could do you a trick, download and burn of the a copy of Ubuntu this can then be ran in LiveCD mode, which runs the entire operating system from the CD and your RAM - ok this is not fast but it makes NO lasting changes to your hard drive it also give you access to your hard drive so you can pull of the files and pop them on a USB memory stick.
Ubuntu also comes with Open office included so that will allow you to open all the assignments to be able to mark themDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
I diont think I can - I dont have a cd drive on this computer to burn it onto.0

you can put it onto a USB stick instead of a CD so long as you can get your computer to boot from USB, just searching for the info for you

right, ok, thats fab, thanks, I will try it this afternoon - in the meantime, I have just thought of another computer I can use, so the immediate stress of not being able to get work done is alleviated!!
I may have a go this afternoon with the ubuntu malarkey, or I may get on with the other stuff I need to do first, then try and fix the computer later in the week... either way, I may well be back on here picking your brains again!
Thanks so much, you are so helpful over here!0 -
Can you not just take h/drive out and connect it into another pc for quick access - fix the os later.0

Hi all,
thanks for your help last week - I managed to get hold of the work I needed to do urgently and work on it on a different PC - however, I am now looking at whether to try and get my laptop working... can someone explain, in idiot proof terms, what Ubuntu does, and why I should download it?
many thanks!
