Hi all,
The wife and I are planning our next holiday and looking for suggestions. We go late Oct 2010.
Last year we went to Vietnam( loved it) the year befor we went to Thailand.
This year we have booked some cheap Air Asis flights to KL. We have 18 nights to spend but not sure where to go.
We want the following:
Must be cheap.
Hate touristy places but need some night life/local bars/good cheap food. We love beer/wine/food and a bit of a party.
Would probably stay at 4/5 places during our 18 days, say about 30% city and the rest seaside.
Would like beach huts, even camping, but also like nice hotels too. Dont like roughing it , but like basic luxuries.
We should be qualified PADI Divers by then so a diving resort would be good.
Thanks

On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.

Perhentian Islands are pretty impressive. Also you can get a cheap flight to Kota Kinabalu (Malaysian Borneo) with air asia from KL and then get to Sipadan which is widely regarded as one of the best dive sites in the world.0

If you have any questions fire away. We spent about a month in Borneo and Malaysia last year on our way back from Korea. Also spent a good few weeks there a couple of years back so know of a few places to go visit.0

You'd be better getting a flight from KL to Sandakan or Tawau (I'm not sure if you can do the latter direct) for Sipidan, which I can confirm is an almost unbeatable dive destination. It isn't so cheap unless you stay on the mainline and get a boat out every day though.0 -
You need to check the weather as there are wide variances depenfding on the time of year. We went in January and the East Coast of the Malaysian peninsula was fine but the west coast and Borneo had floods.
Generally the East coast around langkawi and Penang tends to br a bit more developed with bigger and more upmarket hotels. Penang is also a very interesting place to visit but the diving etc and the breaches are not wonderful. The beaches on Langkawi are stunning.
Air Asia is a good cheap way of getting round and we found them reliable and reasonalbly on time0 -

Be aware that alcohol is more expensive in Malaysia, and if you go to the less touristy east coast for diving it will be harder to find outside of a main resort hotel.
It's not on a par with Vietnam or Thailand for nightlife anywhere...more Muslim and conservative.
If you stay in KL, try and get a Parkview room at Traders overlooking Petronas...stunning views.0 -
I have to ditto diving at Sipadan. It's years since we were there but the memories linger forever.0

Thanks for the replies. A month later and still not sure where to book though.
Where would we stay for Sipidan ( someone mentioned cheaper on the mainland?) Any other suggestions of where to go as we were thinking of staying at 4 places. Wiki travel says dont go to Perhentian Islands after October due to weather so perhaps that rules out early November?
Any suggestions on Koh Samui or KohTao or similar islands. Somewhere where we could hire a motorbike and explore would be good ( a quiet place - hate traffic+bikes)
We were thinking about Langkawi but jellyfish seem an issue and the sea not too good, but would have suited us well beer and food wise ( and price), still might go there anyway and just do non sea things for a while.
Please, any more suggestions appreacited. Did I mention it must be reasonably cheap.
