45 degree rule.....

I've just had plans approved for a small 2 story extension at the back of my house (semi). The planners asked for the plans to be amended as the rear of the extension jutted out too far and therefore breached the 45 degree rule. This was done and the plans were approved.
Having re-checked the plans, they have measured the 45 degrees from the edge of the neighbours window (the edge nearest us). I thought that the imaginary 45 degree line was drawn from the middle of the neighbours window? Are there different interpretations on this by the planners, or have I been robbed of a couple of feet of space by a planners error?

Based on our own experience, the 45 degrees start from the edge of the window/opening closer to your own boundary.0

I thought it was the middle of the window.0

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who is uncertain then! Any other views?
Thanks.0 -
Don't think its a hard and fast legal rule anyway is it? Everything I've seen relating to it indicates the middle of the cill is generally used so may be worth asking the question from your planning dep't. Does it make a huge difference?0

Thanks for the info folks. I'm building over a sewer and it may be the difference between having a wall 500mm away from the sewer (complying with the water company requirements) and having the wall too close and therefore not being able to build!0
