Internet Explorer not opening just creating a shortcut

Options
I don't know what I've just done but when I click on the Internet Explorer Icon it dosn't open but just creates another shortcut.

I have by chance Firefox installed and have managed to get to the Internet (and here) using it.

I've also tried to get into my Windows Live email and I can see there are emails but can not read them and getting 'error box' saying The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\mshtml.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against you installation diskette.

I can not create an email either now.

Many thanks

You can't uninstall IE on any recent version of Windows.

You don't need any disks to do a system restore although it did need to be turned on (it is by default I think) If you open windows help there should be an option to use Windows restore on the initial page if not search help for it.

You can't download Windows install disks from any legitimate source but there may be some disks that reset your machine to the original shipped status on the manufacturers website.

    What OS are you using?

Have you run virus/malware scans, if so what with and did you find any problems?

Have you installed any new hardware, ram, graphics card etc. before the problem occured?
  • Think fiddiwebb has a point there with virus/malware. It should be ruled out: (Instructions by alienRIK):

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ma..._anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/2894/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

    I'm using Windows XP

The only thing I have installed recently was Vodaphoe software for Dongle. Everything (Internet Explorer/Mail) was working fine then all of a sudden I have got the above problems.

Already have malwarebytes on pc and ran it this morning. No errors found but I will run it again and post log.

Also have Superantispyware which found the normal 50 adware which I removed. This took ages as the same error message as in post 1 kept coming up every 30 seconds while running.

I also have AVG which runs everyday and has no faults found.

Re hijackthis, I downloaded as suggested but it is not showing as an icon or under programs. I tried to search for it but that's another program which dosn't seem to work.
