Also Glowgirl - good news! The cheaper the product, generally speaking, fewer cones.

Have you tried cholesterol (£1.99 from Sallys - also Boots). It's a deep treatment that really softens and moisturises, but isn't heavy and has no cones. .

where abouts in Boots does one find this? With hair stuff? What does the packaging look like? Sorry or all the questions :o

I really want to try these products but went into town and they didnt have either, they didnt even know what I was talking about when I asked and they only had one type of Alberto product, thats what you get for living in the sticks;)I've seen lir's link (hi lostinrates:))and will try and find the other products online at Boots later tonight when I have time, is it free delivery from them?

Just had a thought, I'm going to London very soon and know of lots of shops that stock products for Afro type hair, after seeing the link to the conditioner I wonder are there any other products of this type that anyone could recommend?

Not sure its very 'cone free (not checked as I have never used it) but my sister swears by the Aphogee hair mask used on Afro hair (she has bleached to within an inch of its life barbie hair) she said it stopped her hair breaking (which must be a small miracle as its bleached every other week!) if your hair is very damaged I'd use that, if its just very dry try the Phillip Kingsley masque, again I am not sure on the ingredience but having used a sample sachet a afew years ago it always stuck out to me as being one to recommend.

I use aphogee too and it is amazing. I use the shampoo for damaged hair and the 2 minute keratin reconstructor - fab!

Thanks for these ideas - my hair is long and gets soooo dry because I have to wash it every day (roots get horrid otherwise but lengths get terribly dry as a result!)

I have a friend who works in Lush who told me that their hair products don't have harmful ingredients in, not sure if silicone etc was included in that, but thought I would share :o

I use an olive range which comes from London, the mask is excellent, and lasts a loooong time. there are other products in the range, and no, i dont smell like a salad! :D

Boots do a lovely Oliveoil range that seems to be marketed at afro type hair (only the larger boots near me). They do a finishing cream as well as the shampoo and conditioning mask. I just need to watch out for proteins that are sometimes present in products aimed at afro hair as they make my hair very crunchy and brittle.

I agree flippin, protein is not good on my hair either:(its such a minefield distinguishing between protein and moisturising, add no cone into that and you could spend hours searching, still, with everyones help I'm getting there, I'm very happy with my hair atm, so much so that I went out today without my extensions in:eek::TIts not as long as I want but definetly getting there and now I'm leaving the curl to its own devices it dosnt quite go with my extensions, maybe that should be my next thread, how to get your hair to grow quickly:D

Theres a website called Makeup alley which explained all this to me but basicly sulfates (found in shampoos) dry hair out as they rinse away the natural oils as well as dirt, and silicons (found in conditioners) weigh hair down and also cause drying as they displace the natural oils in the hair strand (they displace the natural moisture and replace it with silicons which makes hair look smoother but over time causes dryness).

I started out looking for shampoos and conditioners without sulfates and silicons (anything ending in 'cone' is a silicone) and its not easy. The only stuff I found was Aveda which is pricey even if it does take me 4 times as long to get through it! I was lucky, last year Marie Claire ? gave away free bottles of the stuff and I hadn't yet used it and so I started to. Ebay have some Aveda there (but you know the rule of thumb re:fakes) sites like lookfantastic, hqhair and etc sell Aveda and often have discounts on either delivery or if you spend a minimum amount.

It did make a difference though, hair far less frizzy and I have had no split ends since I had it cut in early Feb! (dryness amid other things causes split ends).

I am sure there are products out there with reduced amounts of sulfates/silicones and so better to use if you can't get it sulfate/silicon free, apparently John Freida and Pantene are worst for this.

There may be other ideas out there but just wanted to add as it made such a difference for me.

After reading this I checked the ingredients of my Aveda products, the conditioner does not have cones, but the shampoo does!
And I have just bought a new bottle.

I'm really annoyed, same as Body Shop, they market themselves as being more natural (and Aveda is also so expensive!), but they put the same nasties as anyone else in their products!
