Your eyesight is valuable - I am self employed and have vision problems (have no central vision in my left eye), thankfully the DVLA have deemed me fit to drive although I did take another driving test and passed. Have you thought about contacting Access to Work? Access to Work can come and assess your work station and will bear the whole cost of any adjustments you may need to help you do your work. If you have had your driving licence taken away from you, apply for Disability Living Allowance and then you can get a free bus pass and Access to Work may provide a helper to help you get about or will pay for taxis.

I do a lot of computer work but make sure that I break up the day by doing other things and I have even been known to have an afternoon nap which works wonders.

I know you say you don't want to have benefits but you have paid taxes so you are entitled I would have thought to Disability Living Allowance and applying for help from Access to Work is nothing to be ashamed of..if it keeps you in work what have you to lose? They may suggest a larger monitor and even some zoomtext software which magnifies everything etc.

Thanks for that information. The Access to Work scheme certainly seems something worth looking into. Part of the problem is that I'm not going to be registered blind or partially sighted because it's not that sort of visual problem. I got my bus card yesterday - I just produced the DVLA letter. Not sure what the requirements of DLA are.

I had a quick look through the Disability Living Allowance, but again, I don't think I'd qualify for this. I don't need any extra care, and I don't think the mobility component (if you can't walk or find it very hard to walk, or you need help getting around) really applies. After all, I might now be allowed to drive, but I can still use public transport - OK, there are silly things like I might not be able to see very easily what number the bus is - but it's not something I think they would consider much of a problem.

Heh-heh, you can tell you work for yourself - no such thing as an insurmountable problem, merely a challenge that might take a bit more effort to overcome.
