can somebody tell me if it is possible to get an overdraft before you're actually at uni- i would really like one now before i go off to uni as i've heard student loans, grants and bursuries wont actually be handed over until you've started at uni
do i just open an account and apply for an overdraft there and then- if so how long will it take before i have access to the money
thanks

As far as I am aware you can open a Student Account before you attend University. All you need is your UCAS Number in some cases or in others your University Acceptance Letter.
Obviously you also need normal documentation such as photographic ID and proof of address.
Hope this helps.0 -

Thanks in advance!0 -

im sure you can open an account- what i wanna know is- do you have to wait until you are actually at uni to be able to apply for an overdraft0 -
Ah, sorry, I misread the question.
I am not 100% sure on that one! But I am sure someone will be along soon with the answer.0 -
A lot of banks won't let you have the overdraft until your place is confirmed (i.e. after results day if you're on an unconditional offer) - this has passed for most people now though.
By the sounds of it NatWest are holding back overdrafts for most people until September.
Best bet is to ask your branch and see what they say - they might give you the overdraft or agree to give you a bit of the overdraft in advance.0 -
i was already with HSBC, i went in in june with my confirmation letter and was given my overdraft there and then0

My son starts Uni in September which is also when his funding goes into his bank. He has opened a Natwest student account and has already used part of his overdraft to buy necessaries. I always thought you couldn't use an o/d until you'd put money in but appararently not.~A mind is a terrible thing to waste on housework~0
