You could gently remind your parents that they still receive child benefit and (possibly) child tax credit for you so it's really their job to provide your necessary expenses like fares whilst you're in education.

When it comes to things like personal spending, I have to agree that paid work is the way forward for you.

    My thoughts exactly!

I'm all for young people paying their way and I've never paid for mobile phones and the like, but I find it odd parents expect them to fully support themselves when they still receive benefits for them!

I don't know how it works in your area OP, but it's definitely worth getting hold of your local council. Ours does (or did this year anyway) a subsidised college fee. You pay approx £180 per year, and are able to split it into 3 lots, so £60 each term. Keeps the costs of buses down massively.

I got child benefit and child tax credit whilst they were in college, so just presumed that I'd be funding their fares, lunches (sandwiches!), books etc, and of course all their costs at home.

They all worked though if they wanted phone top up, make up, xbox games or whatever.
