MP's now threaten total ban on Premium Rate services 'as has happened in other countries'.

    firstly

call your phone providers - both bt & your secondry

ask for premium and 0870 numbers to be barred.!

this will stop most fo it, you need to do both as you can dial a number to get back to bt

also be aware that those with phone info can use your line - from another location to make calls

many ppl are complaining to bt and they basically tell you they dont make mistakes

    this is rubbish!

in some areas this is happening all the time but BT are telling customers they do not know of this

call oftel and refuse to pay for unmade calls

check the press as there have been many stories

check your bill - evry time

As soon as this problem was mentioned on the news last night, I dialled 150 (as advised) and asked BT to put a bar on all overseas premium rate numbers. This was done immediately (although it had initially taken a while to get through). Trouble is, after having read about dial up numbers being 'hi-jacked' don't know if I am now completely safe. I check my online telephone account regularly, and so far - so good - phew!
if i had known then what i know now

you can always unplug your modem when your not using your computer.

you can also change your settings on your pc not to dial automatically.

or switch to bband and take you old modem out/away

but there is another scam now where calls to numbers are made by someone hacking into BTs system

a whole village had the same problem but BT refused to acknowledge that there was a problem

    good old BT

    SWEVEN:

I do not dispute that such scams exist. In fact I confirmed the existence of such scams on the ICSTIS website before making my post.

As for seeking refunds, I was merely re-iterating what ICSTIS say on their website and what they have told me in personal correspondence.

I also re-iterate that BT can do nothing about blocking these numbers unless and until they are proven as scams by ICSTIS.

I have had personal involvement in two cases where fraudsters have conned Yellow Pages, BT and their customers and I probably feel more strongly about fraudsters than you.

I spent two years investigating these people, at great cost to myself both financially and personally but, In both cases, my personal involvement means that these scam artists no longer advertise in Yellow Pages and one was barred from company directorship for five years.

I sought no recompense for my financial losses either from the scam artists, BT or Yellow Pages, I simply saw it as my duty to stop others getting 'stung'. My satisfaction was in achieving that aim.

Well, well done you! but here's the thing. Stung for £240 (spybot, virus software, firewall etc all on computer - they still got through) Did not have broadband at the time due to rural area. Our scammer was already on ICSTIS rogue list whenn we were hit apparently. Asked BT NOT to pass on the money to them but they did. So,to carify - have confirmation that we were victims of a scam from BT and ICSTIS,money taken from us to pay the scammers - WHO IS GOING TO HELP US GET OUR MONEY BACK.

You seem to know a lot - any answers?
  • gregg, can I just point out that you have brought up a thread that is 18 months old and so the answer you are looking for may not be in this thread either.

Also, please don't shoot the messengers, the users who have posted on this thread have been trying to help but they don't know all the answers.

Of course I realised that this thread was quite old but would like to point out that the problem is ongoing - people still read em (you did) and may throw up new light, its always worth resurrecting something like this as legislation is due very soon as I understand. I have also been looking at the other threads.

I take your point that a lot of users on this thread have been trying to help - I have not "shot" them - the ones that make me angry (and, if you look at other threads, seem to get other people's backs up too) are the ones who obviously don't know what they are on about and make crass remarks which are of absolutely no constructive use whatsoever. Also, tell me, why do people take it upon themselves to defend BT to such an extent - if you look at the majority of the threads, and correct me if I am wrong here, but hardly any of these BT defenders have actually been victims of this scam. Wonder if they would be so quick to defend BT if they had been?

My grateful thanks go to all those who have given constructive advice which I and other people can utilise in these cases.

Savvy has hit the nail on the head, I did this a few years back I would advise anyone who may be wondering about Email integrity to use a program that allows you to view your emails on the ISP's server before you download them to your PC, this way you can check them first and delete the crap. I have been using "Mailwasher pro" for two years and it is excellent you can set up multiple email accounts and it is only about £5 a year to re-register
